Now, we've all seen the lunar lander
programs which give you all of the
time you need to make your decisions.
If you wanted, you could go to your
trusty physics book and figure out the
exact answers. This program is a
bit different.
Instead of allowing you all the time
in the world to make your decisions,
this program operates in real time.
What this means is this: if you don't
give your ship any thrust, you will
drift down (and crash) on the surface
of the planet.
An actual spaceship needs constant
attention and manipulation to land
correctly. So does this spacecraft!
If you're a good enough pilot and can
react quickly enough, you may be able
to guide your ship to a safe landing.
If you apply too much thrust, you
could escape from the moon's weak
gravitational field. In this case,
you would be doomed to drift endlessly
in space (not a very comforting idea).
RUNning the program is very simple.
Plug your joystick into Port #2.
After a few seconds, you will have
control of your ship. The arrow to
the left of the screen is your ship's
altitude above the surface. The arrow
on the right is the amount of thrust
you are applying. To move it up,
simply press the joystick forward (or
up as some people would say). To
decrease your thrust, pull the
joystick back (or down). If you find
that you have applied way too much
thrust, you can press the fire button
and this will turn your engines off
completely. Also be careful to watch
the amount of fuel you have left (top
right of the screen). If your fuel
goes to zero, you will begin to drift
down to the surface where you will
probably crash!
